(WAU, WESTERN BAHR EL GHAZAL STATE) – The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority has launched construction work on a new passenger terminal at Wau Airport, marking a key step in the country’s ongoing efforts to expand and modernise its aviation infrastructure.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including the Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, the Minister of Transport, the Undersecretary, and the Director General of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority, Dr. Ayiei Garang.

The event also included an inspection visit to the Wau radar station, highlighting broader efforts to improve air navigation and operational safety in the region.

Authorities said the new terminal is expected to improve passenger handling capacity, enhance service delivery, and support the growth of domestic air transport in South Sudan.

Wau Airport serves as a key transport hub for Western Bahr el Ghazal State and surrounding regions, connecting passengers and cargo between Juba and other domestic destinations.

The aviation authority said the project represents a significant milestone in efforts to upgrade national aviation infrastructure and improve the quality of air travel services.

Officials stated that the development forms part of a wider national programme aimed at strengthening airport facilities, improving safety standards, and supporting economic activity linked to air transport.

The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority expressed appreciation to government partners, stakeholders, and technical teams involved in supporting the aviation modernisation programme.

Authorities said improved airport infrastructure is expected to encourage increased passenger movement, support trade activities, and strengthen regional connectivity within South Sudan.

The Wau Airport project follows ongoing efforts to improve aviation safety systems and operational efficiency across the country’s airports.

In a related development, the leadership of Juba International Airport has introduced airport shuttle buses to improve passenger movement within the country’s main international airport.

The new shuttle service is designed to provide safe and reliable transport for passengers travelling between terminals and aircraft parking areas.

Airport officials said the initiative aims to improve comfort, reduce delays, and enhance the overall passenger experience at Juba International Airport.

The introduction of shuttle buses forms part of a broader programme to modernise airport operations and improve service standards for both domestic and international travellers.

South Sudan’s aviation sector has continued to receive attention as part of wider infrastructure development plans aimed at improving transport efficiency and supporting economic growth.

Industry observers say improved airport facilities and better passenger services could support tourism, business travel, and logistics operations in the country.

The Civil Aviation Authority said it remains committed to upgrading airport infrastructure across South Sudan and improving safety and efficiency in air transport services.
