Authorities in Tambura County, Western Equatoria State, have launched an investigation into the tragic killing of a civilian who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen while returning home from his farm on Tuesday.

The victim has been identified as Kennedy Kuragpio, aged 36.

State Police Commissioner Gen. Phillip Madut Tong has confirmed that the perpetrators are currently on the run.

“We have received reports of a civilian being killed by unknown gunmen in Tambura. Investigations are underway, and we urge the community to assist the security forces in identifying the assailants,” Tong stated.

He condemned the attack as a criminal act that jeopardizes peace and stability.

Security forces have stepped up patrols in the area to restore order and prevent any further incidents.

Local residents, speaking anonymously due to safety concerns, have expressed their apprehension. Many have sought refuge in camps, fearing additional attacks.

“We have heard rumours of more possible attacks by criminals. We feel helpless and have sought shelter in camps,” one resident disclosed.

A community leader has called on government authorities to intervene.

“It is the duty of the county commissioner and security forces to safeguard the community during these challenging times,” the community leader emphasised. “People are suffering and losing their lives. We urge both the state and national governments to support our commissioner in identifying the perpetrators of this heinous attack.”

Tambura County has recently experienced violence perpetrated by armed groups, causing alarm that the unrest could escalate ethnic tensions in the region.
