(YAMBIO) – A three day training course on fiscal oversight for members of the Western Equatoria State Transitional Legislative Assembly began on Tuesday, aimed at improving how public finances are monitored and managed at the state level.
The programme is jointly supported by the Western Equatoria State Government and the United Nations Development Programme, known as UNDP. It is designed to build the capacity of parliamentarians to exercise effective oversight of state finances, budgeting processes, and public expenditure.
Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa officially opened the workshop. He said the training would equip lawmakers with the knowledge and tools needed to perform their oversight duties properly.
“You are the voice and representatives of the people. UNDP is equipping you with the knowledge and tools needed to conduct oversight of government resources and the budget,” Governor Badagbu said.
He noted that parliamentary oversight extends beyond simply watching over public money. It also covers ensuring accountability across all government activities.
The governor said that strengthening public financial management remains a key priority for Western Equatoria State. He added that restoring public trust in state institutions is essential for building infrastructure, advancing peace and stability, improving early warning systems, delivering better services, and bringing communities together.
The Speaker of the Transitional State Legislative Assembly, Ann Tuna Richard, thanked the Ministry of Finance for organising the training. She called it an important effort to strengthen the skills of legislators and noted that members last attended a similar programme in 2024.
“This training is important in building the capacity of members to effectively carry out their oversight role, which is one of Parliament’s core responsibilities,” Speaker Richard said.
She also praised Governor Badagbu for his leadership and his commitment to openness, accountability, and sound public financial management in the state.
The training brought together members of the assembly and officials from key ministries. It is jointly backed by the Government of Western Equatoria State and UNDP as part of wider efforts to support good governance, accountability, and proper handling of public resources.
