(JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN) – Renovation works on the Terminal 3 building at Juba International Airport are nearing completion, with a high level delegation from the Office of the President visiting the site to inspect progress.

The delegation included Minister of Presidential Affairs Africano Mande Gedima, Minister of Transport Rizik Zakaria Hassan and Minister of Finance and Planning Kuol Daniel Ayulo. They were received by senior officials of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority, led by Director General Dr Ayiei Garang Deng Ayiei.

According to a press release from the Aviation Authority, the inspection visit reflected the government’s continuing commitment to modernising national infrastructure and delivering efficient services in the transport sector.

Following the tour, Transport Minister Hassan praised the progress made so far. He underlined the need to finish the project on time and to the required standards. “The renovation of this terminal building reflects the government’s dedication to improving public infrastructure and enhancing the experience of travellers and stakeholders,” he said.

The Minister noted that the upgraded Terminal 3 facility will help improve operational efficiency, safety and passenger comfort. He added that the project is expected to strengthen transport connectivity and support economic growth.

During the visit, the delegation received technical briefings from engineers and Civil Aviation Authority staff supervising the renovation works. The officials identified sections that have already been completed.

The inspection was also attended by officials from government institutions, technical experts and contractor representatives.

Once finished, the renovated Terminal 3 building is expected to offer improved public services while meeting modern infrastructure standards.

In a separate but related development, the International Civil Aviation Organisation has approved the creation of the Juba Flight Information Region. This is a major step as South Sudan moves to take full control of its airspace from Sudan.

The approval followed a submission by the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority, led by Director General Ayiei Garang Ayiei, during the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium held in Marrakech, Morocco, in April 2026.

A Flight Information Region is a designated block of airspace where a country’s aviation authority is responsible for providing air traffic services. These include flight information, navigation assistance, weather updates and emergency alert services.

The new Juba FIR will separate South Sudan’s airspace from Sudan’s Khartoum FIR, marking significant progress toward aviation independence and sovereign management of the country’s skies.
