(JUBA) – The National Communications Authority (NCA) Board of Directors held a special meeting to address problems in the telecommunications sector and find ways to keep mobile and internet services running, affordable and of good quality across South Sudan.

The Board received a detailed report from the Director General. This report covered the difficult economic and operational conditions facing the industry. It also covered the NCA’s talks with mobile network companies and wide consultations with government bodies, Parliament and civil society groups to find workable, long lasting answers.

The Board recognised the work done by the NCA management to look at different policy choices. It praised the Director General and the management team for their hard work, their method of consulting widely and their commitment to protecting the nation’s connections while balancing the needs of both customers and service providers.

After discussions, the Board approved a set of regulatory actions. These actions are designed to support the health and survival of the telecommunications sector, keep services running without interruption and ensure that citizens and businesses throughout the country can still access telecommunications services.

The Board also stressed that protecting consumers, maintaining the standard of services, keeping stakeholders involved and raising public awareness are all vital parts of any action that has an effect on the sector.

The National Communications Authority said it remains committed to working closely with all partners to support a strong, open and viable telecommunications sector that helps economic growth, digital inclusion and national development.
