(JUBA) – The Ministry of Trade and Industry in South Sudan has strengthened its cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) following a consultative meeting in Juba aimed at advancing trade sector reforms and improving project implementation.

The discussions held on 11 June 2026 reviewed ongoing joint programmes and examined strategies for delivering pending initiatives intended to support the country’s trade development agenda. Both sides focused on policy reform, institutional capacity building and digital transformation in the trade sector.

Key areas discussed included the Diagnostic Trade Integration Study, national trade and trade facilitation policies, and the development of an e-commerce strategy. The meeting also addressed plans for capacity building programmes, establishment of a national steering committee, public awareness activities, and initiatives aimed at promoting employment opportunities for young people and women.

Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Labanya Margaret Mathya welcomed continued support from UNDP, noting that the partnership remains important for strengthening the country’s trade systems. She highlighted ongoing efforts within the ministry to modernise operations through digital tools and improved connectivity.

Dr Mathya also noted that internet connectivity support provided through UNDP is expected to improve communication between national institutions and international partners. She said this would support faster coordination, improved service delivery and more effective implementation of trade policies.

UNDP Resident Representative Dr Mohamed Abchir reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s trade sector. He described the Ministry of Trade and Industry as a key partner in efforts to promote sustainable economic development and institutional reform.

Dr Abchir said the consultative meeting provided an opportunity to review challenges affecting project delivery and to identify new policy priorities. He added that strengthening cooperation would help improve the effectiveness of ongoing programmes and support long term development goals in the trade sector.

Both parties emphasised the importance of continued collaboration in areas linked to trade facilitation, digital systems and economic planning. They also noted the need to ensure that programmes translate into practical benefits for businesses and communities across the country.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing inclusive economic growth, with particular focus on creating employment opportunities and supporting participation by youth and women in trade related activities.
