(GOGRIAL WEST COUNTY, WARRAP STATE) – The National Ministry of Roads and Bridges has intensified efforts to improve the condition of the highway connecting Wau, Kuajok, Gogrial and Akon in Warrap State as part of emergency measures to maintain road access during the rainy season.
The rehabilitation works are being led on site by National Minister Peter Lam Both, who said the priority is to ensure that key sections of the road remain passable despite seasonal weather challenges that often disrupt transport and trade across the region.
The ministry said maintaining road connectivity during the rainy season is essential for the movement of people, goods and services, particularly along major transport corridors that link Warrap State with other parts of South Sudan.
Earlier in the week, Minister Peter Lam Both held discussions with Warrap State Governor Bol Wek Agoth in Kuajok on coordinated efforts between national and state authorities to strengthen road maintenance along the corridor.
The discussions focused on the use of local materials known as maraam to stabilise sections of the highway affected by cotton soil conditions. These areas have been identified as vulnerable points along the Wau-Kuajok-Gogrial-Akon route.
Governor Bol Wek Agoth agreed that state authorities would support the supply of maraam for use in targeted sections of the road. The collaboration is intended to improve durability and reduce disruptions caused by seasonal flooding and erosion.
Following the meeting, the minister and his delegation inspected ongoing works and participated in the application of maraam on one of the affected stretches between Tharkueng and Kuajok. The section is considered one of the most difficult parts of the highway due to loose soil conditions.
Officials said the intervention is part of a broader maintenance strategy aimed at improving road reliability across Warrap State and supporting economic activity by ensuring smoother transport of agricultural produce and commercial goods.
The Roads Ministry said continued cooperation between national and state governments will remain important in addressing infrastructure challenges, particularly in regions where weather conditions have a significant impact on road usability.
The current works are expected to continue as part of ongoing efforts to keep major transport routes open and functional throughout the rainy season, with further upgrades planned for other vulnerable sections of the highway network.
