(LONDON) – Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has spoken publicly for the first time about being left out of England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, insisting he is not upset by a choice he cannot change.
The 24 year old was a surprise omission when England manager Thomas Tuchel named his final 26 players for the tournament in North America. Palmer had struggled with injury and a loss of form during the past club season. Despite scoring in the European Championship final two years ago, he was not selected.
Speaking to iD magazine, Palmer said he was not crying over the decision. He added that he planned to rest over the summer for the first time in three or four years before returning to the game. He said he would watch England’s matches if he had nothing else to do.
Phil Foden, Trent Alexander Arnold and Harry Maguire were also left out of Tuchel’s squad. The omissions have sparked wide debate about the manager’s selection logic. Tuchel is known for favouring players who fit his system rather than choosing purely on reputation.
England began the tournament with a 4-2 win over Croatia but then drew 0-0 against Ghana in their second group match. The struggle to break down a stubborn defence in that game led some observers to suggest a player with Palmer’s technical skill could have made a difference. Further tests await against Panama and potential knockout stage opponents.
Palmer said his season had not been his best but accepted the situation. His calm response has closed the door on any public drama around the decision.
